The summary on the following pages gives a brief outline of some full-time Polytechnic and University courses, the likely prerequisite school subjects, and present course entry requirements. It is a guide to help in the selection of appropriate subjects. Students are encouraged to use the links to all the Universities and Polytechnic websites for more detail.
Check current entry requirements and prerequisites from the websites, university calendars, Student Guides or prospectus of the particular tertiary institution, as these may vary. More information is available from Career Services.

  • 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in an approved subject  + Literacy and Numeracy Requirements (see below)
  • 14 credits at Level 3 or higher in no more than 2 domains or approved subjects
                           = 42 credits at Level 3
Literacy and Numeracy Requirements

  •  4 credits in Reading at Level 2 or higher
  •  4 credits in Writing at Level 2 or higher
 NB
  • University of Waikato etc also have limited entry programmes.
  • Unitec has set estimated equivalencies between NCEA, Sixth Form Certificate and other qualifications. Go to the Unitec NCEA Equivalence site. This may be used as a GUIDE to entry requirements for other polytechnic programmes. Note the proviso that these equivalencies are accurate for 2004 only, to be revised in 2005.
  • International students currently in the N.Z. high school system must note the requirements of the C.E.S. They cannot substitute IELTS or TOEFL for the Literacy NCEA Level 2/AS requirement. They must also carefully check the particular university's academic requirements as some have higher credit levels/UCAS tariff for entry.
