Leave
We strongly recommend full seven day boarding, as we believe that the most successful boarder is one committed to taking a full part in the life of the hostel. Nevertheless, after the first three weeks' residence, there is no restriction
on weekend leave as long as written/faxed/e-mailed application is made in advance for catering purposes. Leave, with parental permission, is granted for visits to relatives and family friends as well, provided that full contact details are given.

Board
The hostel provides three full well-balanced meals a day as well as snacks at interval, after-school snack and supper. Great care is taken to ensure that the boys are well fed. Full laundry services are provided by our resident laundress.
Dress
Boarders are required to have full day school uniform and Number One dress uniform. After school except when on town leave during the
week and at weekends, boys wear ordinary clothing as at home. Ostentatious or cult dress is not considered appropriate, and is not acceptable.
Life in the Hostel
Every attempt is made to make life as homely as possible within the framework of an ordered and well disciplined establishment.
Prep and Tuition
“Prep” study is a very important part of Hostel life. The Duty Masters supervise both junior and senior prep each evening, after dinner duties have been completed. Juniors have 1 hour of supervised homework while seniors have 1 ½ hours, Sunday – Thursday.

Sport, Cultural and Hobby Interests

Carruth has the use of the school fields, swimming pool and tennis courts, and the hostel is within walking distance of Kensington gym and many other sporting facilities in town. While these are not a compulsory feature of hostel life, sports and cultural activities do play an important role in the lives of most boarders.
The school offers a wide range of sports and boys are expected to play for the school where possible.

Rugby, league, cricket, soccer, hockey, golf, basketball, athletics, tennis, surfing, surf lifesaving, waka ama, sailing, martial arts and boxing are just a few of the activities the boys are able to participate in while living at Carruth.

The school also has a strong performing arts department, which the boys can fully participate in. They can take part in school drama productions, music performances and Kapa Haka, many of which are performed with Girls’ High.
